Re: Cold weather flying

Thanks again for all the info. The cowl bumps are from a 0-300 installed out of a 172H model back in 1967.A hangar accident (337 included for engine, cowl, exhaust, prop and spinner.) I had my winter engine cover made with deep socks that fit over the long exhausts and it has been working well. I wil...

Re: Cold weather flying

IMG_0179-(2)SMALL.jpg I have a different cowling than your pictures. will the oil sump area still retain enough air for cooling if it is blocked off. I could definately seal off 1/2 of the intakes in the front. I see most are the verticle 1/2 is blocked, any benefit over closing off the 1/2 of the ...

Cold weather flying

12-23-11-013.jpg 12-23-11-014.jpg This is my first winter owning/flying my 170B in the cold. I have been up twice and the mercury has only reached -5. Here are some pics of my oil temp gauge. I know there is a minimum temp for take off, but how about operation? This is as warm as the oil got. I hav...

1st off runway landings in Alaska.

I just had my first off runway landings at a get together at Wagon Wheel, Alaska. (about 70 miles from Nome) We had about 10 planes show up. It was a great time. Me and a buddy flew our Cessnas there the day before to scope it out and practice landing. He has a 140 cessna. It was a great experience ...

Re: I Soloed in my 170 B last night!

As far as I know, the C-145 was replaced with a 0-300 a few years back, there is paperwork on that, maybe they kept the the total assy together, it was done before the guy I bought it from bought it. That would be my guess.

Re: I Soloed in my 170 B last night!

You know a bunch of people have asked me that very question about the bumps on the cowl. I don't know enough to answer that, but I could ask the previous owner. The exhaust or mufflers are close and would probably rub it the bumps were not there. I am still going thru the mountains of paperwork I re...

Re: I Soloed in my 170 B last night!

Thanks everyone! A few things first, the small wheels and pants are going to have to go. There are not many grass runways here, its gravel or rocks for the most part. I am having issues now on the tail surfaces and I'm looking for suggestions to protect the leading edges. Unfortunately, there are no...

Last night I soloed in my 170B. Its been an awesome year! May of 2010 I started training in a Cherokee 140 and I passed my check ride August 31 2010. I started looking for my own Plane right away and I fell in love with the 170. ( It took me 6 months to find the right one) I found a 55 170B in Saras...

My first plane! A 1955 170B

Hello everyone, I have been reading this forum for a while now and I think it is awesome! I have just purchased my first plane and the info contained here will certainly help me keep my plane in tip top shape. I bought it in Sarasota, Florida and I flew it home to Nome, Alaska. It was an unforgettab...
