Re: FAA Common Sense NOT

First google hit for "faa ia renewal" http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/fsdo/ric/local_more/MEDIA/IA%20Renewal%20Information%20and%20Q&a.PDF Quote from the FAA on their website 14 CFR §65.93(a)(1): Has performed at least one annual inspection for each 90 days that the ...

Re: Landing the '48

"Once you're sure the field is made, dump the flaps..." A remnant of my flight training that I haven't experimented with yet.

Re: Landing the '48

Good point Bruce, every landing is different from the previous.

I havent slipped the 170 much but I used to slip the 172 when needed.
It just seems like 40 degrees of flaps precludes the need to slip (so far).

I'm always surprised at how quickly that extra 10 degrees of flap will bleed off speed.

Re: Baggage Bulkhead question

The stuff rolling into the tail was why I figured the buklhead was required.

The new Cessna SkyCatcher uses a mesh material that reminds me of my catamaran days. That would be a lot easier to put in/take out but would probably make the plane louder and colder.

Baggage Bulkhead question

Mine is a stiff board (unknown material) with matching carpet over top. ...and two dozen screws to hold it in place which makes it a real pain to get into the tail. I was thinking of swapping the screws with snaps but I thought I'd ask how others are doing it. The bulkhead has some heft to it...prob...

Re: Landing the '48

With power off, what you have is what you have. You can't control descent, you can only manage it. So, if you're sinking too fast, your only option is to lower the nose and pick up speed up. But that only works if you have some altitude to work with. And you're only lowering your nose to speed up to...

Re: Landing the '48

With only about 40 hours in 81D, I do wheel landings exclusively. I trim the airplane for a neutral pressure on final and still give it a deliberate push forward on touchdown. I was taught to "stick it onto the pavement" so it wont fly away. The springy landing gears are actually nicer to ...

Re: Strut Fairings

Does a red interior count or does it have to be in the slip stream? 8O

Re: Strut Fairings

I never realized the 170 didn't come with fairings and they wouldn't be approved. That's a real good point.

and That's what I thought about the speed increase with the fairings and all. I'd be better off putting in a Vernier Mixture Control :)

Thanks!

Strut Fairings

..I don't have any and I like the way she looks without them.

Would I gain anything significant in speed by adding them/
My guess is no. I probably gained more taking the VOR antenna off than I will by putting fairings on.
But I'd like to hear from the experts

Happy friday!

Re: First Plane

Gotta ask.
How much does removing the back seat shorten your takeoff and how easy is it to put back in?

Re: Bird season

I ended up cutting a piece of 6" thick foam to fit the lower cowl opening. The only issue I see there is water retention when it rains. The foam is going to soak up the rain. What about the tail of the plane? I've been told that the birds will make a nest in any opening bigger than two fingers....

Bird season

Spring is around the corner and, for those that tie outside, that means bird nests.

I'm trying to get in front of it by stuffing foam all through the airplane but, I'm curious what other people are doing to deal with the problem.

Re: Looking for help with my tailwheel bracket Mine is crac

OK I feel better now. The crack I saw wasnt in the bracket itself but rather in the skin a few inches above the bracket. And it's properly drill stopped and not migrating. The tweaked bracket I thought I saw is actually the way the steel is formed. To look at it quickly, it looks bent but its just f...
