Followup

A quick follow-up on this issue:

All of my local locksmiths failed to produce a compatible core, but I got in touch with Wentworth Aircraft, Inc and they pulled the whole lock mechanism of another '55 170 for $20. They were a pleasure to work with:

Left Door Lock & the Sea of Cortez

Hi All - My door lock core is now at the bottom of the Sea of Cortez and I need a new one. Only problem is I'm unable to find one from the usual sources. Specifically, I'm looking for these parts: 0413323-1 "Lock Assembly - Door" 0511112-11 "Latch Assembly - Door" Does anyone kno...

Thank you George. You're a great resource! I went out to the hangar, marked the position of the nut, loosened it up and re-tightened it according to your rule (1/2-3/4 flat turn (probe is relatively new)) and it's in the exact position as before. Feels secure. This is exactly the validation I needed...

I can understand that you should tighten it until it "feels right", but that's difficult for us newbies. Does anyone have a torque value for the probe? or would someone be willing to tighten theirs until it "feels right", then hit it with the torque wrench and see what value come...

Oil Temp Probe - How much torque?

Hi -- I used to have an F&M oil adapter on my 170B, but removed it following an oil leak which caused an off-field landing. I'm now back to the oil screen. I now follow the "KISS" rule. One of the drawbacks to the screen is that the oil temperature probe must be removed at each oil cha...

Do the annual

I can 'third' the recommendation for getting a full annual done. And find someone who's picky. My mechanic missed stuff on the prebuy that cost me over $10k. I have a beautiful plane now, but it took lots of mula to get it there! Have fun, Dennis P.S. If you don't take the annual advice, at the very...

Polishing horizontal stab - How much pressure is too much?

I was polishing my horizontial stabilizer the other day. It has some surface corrosion on the bottom skin, so I was using some pressure to work the corrosion off. I wasn't using a tremendous amount of pressure (I have a hard time quantifiying the value). It was enough that the airplane was rocking a...

Which Scott 3200 parts?

Hi - Well, my shimmey is back. I've greased. I've changed the tire pressure. Still there. My mechanic says it's time to pull the things apart and clean it. While in there, he recommends replacing all the washers, caps, springs, etc. Given this page: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/scot...

Oil Filter failure fixed tailwheel shimmy

Hi - I was having the same problem with the tailwheel. It would shimmy until I eased the back-pressure. In October of last year I had the gasket on an F&M Oil Filter fail and blow all the engine oil onto the belly of the plane. One landing in a field later and the purchase of a new screen (yes, ...

Oil Temperature/Pressure

Hi All - I'm on about hour 12 after getting an engine overhaul on my '55 C170B. I bought the plane with a burnt engine, so this is about hour 15 on the plane (for me). Three questions for you guys: 1) My oil temperature gauge seems to be "reverse sensing". When I start the engine, it start...

I would be very cautious about purchasing an airplane that has been sitting around for 8 years. Prepare for an engine overhaul. And beware that given engine corrosion, a reputable shop will charge anywhere from $14000 to $22000 for an O300 overhaul. Sure, you can get a cheaper one reusing many of th...

Re: C-170B Pre-purchase Inspection

I just made a verbal deal with a fellow on a 1954 C-170B a couple of days ago. Not only my first C-170, but my first aircraft ever. I mailed off the Conditional Sales Contract to him today. Next on the list is the pre-purchase inspection and this is where I need help. Be sure to have your inspector...
