Re: Wanted: Bartone Exhaust Extensions (merged topic)

Dawley just made mine (right side) and I'm happy with it. They did not do it all in one piece but welded the tail bend. But the weld is under the cowl so not seen. If you go with it, I'd suggest being sure they get the angle of the bend out the muffler is correct as that affects the space between th...

Re: Wanted: Bartone Exhaust Extensions (merged topic)

I could use a set if there is a run going. I just had my right one fabricated and they messed up the angle so it did not fit. Took to muffler shop to put a new bend in it to lower the pipe 2" and they crushed it. Argh. So would be interested in getting one or a complete new set done correctly.

Re: Recommendations to overhaul Marvel carburetor

Not sure this is a help but I had a very similar erratic roughness with no pattern (unrelated to humidity, temp, lean/rich, rpm, etc.). Timing was good, plugs and wire were replaced and sent carb for rebuild (lot of time on it). Still rough. So went for rebuilding mags (also high time). Before my me...

Re: Flight of Passage

Great book and an easy, entertaining read. I've bought a bunch just to give out. I will be interesting to follow this reenactment. FYI, Rinker and his brother Nick last year completed a trip along the Oregon Trail with a team of mules. They had quite a time. That book should be coming out later this...

Re: Factory printing on plastic sub-panel

Yes - that is the same panel as in my '56 170. Same color too. George, whether mine was original equipment, I don't know. There was nothing in the logbook to suggest a replacement or mod. My SN is pretty close to end of the 170 line, #27030, so I suspect they were using parts for the upcoming 172? J...

Re: Factory printing on plastic sub-panel

I was pleased with results on my '56. Spray painted panel, let dry for few days. Used black indelible fine point Sharpie and followed the embossed grooves. Fine point fit nicely inside. In a couple of places the grooves were too shallow to follow but with care and going slowly. I did it in the plane...

Good catch. Sent wrong version. This should print to correct scale. Fits in my little card holder.

Re: Mixture Cable Attachment

It was that washer that cut/broke my cable, so I like George's suggestion about wrapping the cable and torquing firmly, but less. I'll also be smoothing/rounding the washer and putting on a light tension spring. If anyone has specific details or experience, let me know.

Re: Tying the bird outside.

Great suggestions, but I'd like to add another. There is more than weather to be concerned about. I lost my "brand new" 170 just this last winter because some idiot 3 planes away didn't secure his plane with a real knot. So I also recommend good "situational awareness" at your ti...

Re: Mixture Cable Attachment

N2582D mentioned a safety spring on the mixture control at carburetor to ensure carb goes rich if cable breaks? Does anyone have a pattern to follow? Mine let go, fortunately with no power loss.

Re: Advice for major repair

This is all incredibly helpful. My adjuster comes tomorrow and I'll ask some of these questions. I like the idea of having the attack plane cover the costs to make me whole. I love my plane and just want it back so I can fly. Unfortunately, the owner let his insurance lapse. So it could get nasty wh...

Re: Advice for major repair

Thanks all. I'll definitlely demand a jig. I can't take on another project just now. I actually bought this and retired so I could fly cross country and visit my kids while I restored my T-craft BC-65 here at home. Too much to handle at moment. Guess I'll take it one step at a time and see what the ...

Advice for major repair

My brand new, to me, 170B was damaged yesterday when another AC broke loose in high winds and landed on top of mine. Question - if this is not declared a total and it can be repaired, do any of you have any words of wisdom regarding who does or doesn't do the repair. Specifically, do either safety o...
