Re: New Fuel

I finally figured it out. The reason bluElder is still spry and young (at least mentally) is because he and his mogas both exist in a time-warp. There is NO ONE and NO WHERE else that modern mogas doesn't eat small engine carbs and go bad after a few months. I doubt he even has to change his underw...

I would run the mineral oil for 25 hours with a oil change at halfway.

Re: trouble with older GPS units

I have a Garmin 55, bought new in 1993, still working fine. The only problem is that they changed the identifiers on some of the airports. No problem though, I keep a 20 year old AOPA directory handy :D

Re: ?Sticking Valve or Carb Ice?

When I had my problem I swapped out my carb with a KNOWN good one, it wasn't the carb and I don't think the carb is your problem. Review my earlier posts, my opinion is still that you need All new valve springs, not just exhaust. Don't know why a lot of folks seem to zero in on the exhaust.

Re: Hangar Door Warranty Problem (Split from ECI Cyl Probs)

I bought a Wilson door, gave them my measurements, they built it and everything is still perfect 18 years later.

Re: ?Sticking Valve or Carb Ice?

I would replace ALL springs, intake and exhaust. Now that you said that the overhaul wasn't complete, (same cylinders and springs re-installed) I am leaning even more that your problem is valve springs.

Re: ?Sticking Valve or Carb Ice?

Weak springs caused the valve to float, not stick. I would lose 200-300 RPM with a mild but VERY noticeable vibration or shudder. In my case it was probably 1 cylinder that had the weak springs but I replaced all the springs in the motor. I am NOT trying to say for sure that this is what his problem...

Re: ?Sticking Valve or Carb Ice?

You only said it was overhauled in 2009. Did it get factory new cylinders or were the old ones "overhauled" If the cylinders were overhauled did they replace ALL valve springs with brand new or did they check the springs for tension and put them back in because they were "within limit...

Re: Rotec radial

My buddy on my field bought 3 of those Rotecs, 2 small ones and 1 of the big ones. They look neat and they are trouble free on a static display airplane. If you want to fly get a Continental or Lyc.

Sounds like the time we landed at Lajes with 1 engine out in the C130. Was darn near looking out the pilots side window at the runway on final.

Re: Cracked lifter bodies on my C-145

It's too bad you didn't mic all the crank journals. They could all be within standard limits. I will just about guarantee you that the shop will tell you that they HAD to grind the crank .010 under. They are looking to generate more work and money. Also the undersize bearings are more expensive than...

Re: propellor color

The prop decals that Moodys and Chief sell are not the correct decals for McCauley props made in the 40's and 50's. I have the correct ones available for $22.00 a pair.
