BL,
I guess I can't argue with you on that point. The straight tail models do look a lot better.

Re: Tailwheel transition time to a 170
gahorn, Thank you for the great info. I've only seen a couple of these tw converted 172's for sale. They seem to be a rare bird. I've only spoken to 1 other person who's flown one. I think his comments were similar to yours. The thing I took away from his conversation is that one wouldn't necessary ...

Re: Tailwheel transition time to a 170
Robert, Thanks for explaining your method. voorheesh, I liked your expaination... very detailed. Thank you. Harold, I guess that makes sense about the 180. It's good to hear from someone with actual 180 experience. I've often considered a 180, and more so recently, only because the prices seemed to ...

Re: Tailwheel transition time to a 170
blueldr, Thanks for describing those two situations. I've read somewhere about the parking brake issue. I'll have to research it a little more. I hadn't thought about the closeness of the rudder pedals, but that makes sense. In my Decathlon the rudder pedals are literally about 1 foot apart. I've na...

Re: Tailwheel transition time to a 170
pif_sonic, Thanks again for your response. I was hoping I would get some actual experiences from owners. Even at those winds and conditions it sounds as though you're comfortable with the airplane. Jr.CubBuilder, Thanks for the reply. The reason I asked about this is related to what I was told when ...

Re: Tailwheel transition time to a 170
blueldr, Thanks for forthrightness. I'm glad to learn anything I can about these airplanes. hilltop170, I'm used to the spring gear on the Decathlon, I wonder if the 170 would be somewhat comparable? Which gear has more bounce on the 170's, the newer or older gear? Is the 180 gear swap the way to go...

Re: Tailwheel transition time to a 170
Jr.CubBuilder, Thanks for the insight. Jinkers, That's good to know about insurance. Let me know how it goes when you take delivery. gahorn, Thanks for the comparisons. That's good info. To all; How is the rudder authority on these airplanes. What kind of crosswind do you guys feel comfortable with?...

Tailwheel transition time to a 170
I've got about 90 hours of tailwheel time in a Decathlon. I was wondering what everyone thought about how my experience may transfer to a 170A or B model. I've ridden in a 180HP 170B, but haven't had a chance to fly one. In my Decathlon, I feel relatively comfortable in most conditions, but I know i...

Texas members who knew/knew of Robert Geren??
I realize this is kind of a longshot, but... I'm currently looking at a 170B that was refurbished by Robert J. Geren in the mid 80's. Apparently, he was well known for his refurbs on Howard DGA's. I don't have much info on him other than he lived in the Dallas area (Carrollton, I believe.) I was won...

Best equipped 170 in the world???
The owner of this plane says its the best equipped 170 in the world. Pretty strong statement. What do you esteemed members of the association think? http://www.trade-a-plane.com/unprotected/specs/49028.html As it turns out, the airplane is located in my general area. I may go and take a look at it.
