Re: Frost Removal using a Red Dragon Preheater?
I use this. http://www.reiffpreheat.com/Beeper%20Box%20pg%201.htm You stick the cheapest pager money can buy inside the box, and then just call your plane to get it warming up an hour or so before you fly. It costs quite a bit, but I figure I fly 100% more in the winter than I would be able to witho...

Re: 29" vs. 31" Alaska Bush Wheels
Jaime, I've run the 31"s for just over a year now and love them. i feel they improved my safety margin on off-field surfaces, increased my angle of attack, raised my prop further out of the sand/gravel/mud/small trees, and I believe they absorb alot of the landing stresses that will wear on the...

Re: Landing gear dimensions
Here are the measurements from my Bolen main gear when I had the 8.50s on. The plane was at empty weight plus full fuel (1,508#): Height from ground to gear at belly skin:33" Height from ground to axle center:9.5" Length of gear between bends:30.5" Width between gear legs at axle:???&...

Re: Landing gear dimensions
George, Can you (or anyone) expand on your understanding about the Bolen gear? A few years ago Avcon, now the owners of the Bolen STC (renamed to "Bush"?), told me the gear legs specific to that conversion were designed "very similar to 180 gear". I assumed they modified 180 gear...

Re: Western Alaska Fishing Trip
It may be a bit early, but landing at Illiamna and parking in the far west parking area puts you in walking distance for great red fishing on the Newhalen river. You'll see plenty of bears too. Flying to Portage Creek on the Nushagak river gives you access to some great king fishing. Just google for...

Re: Straight Tail on floats ??
Jim, there's a guy up here in Anchorage named Cliff who's a DAR at a shop called "Floats Alaska". I don't have his number off hand, but I'm sure you could Google it. A couple of years ago he mentioned to me that Wipaire had some float that they somehow got approved for the early 172. I don...

Thanks Shawn. The 40lbs I was referring to was how much more the Top Prop weighs over the fixed pitch I have now, including the governor, manifold press guage, and prop control cable. It all adds up... Jim, my efforts to get the 1A200 field approved on my plane would be greatly assisted if I could s...

OK Hilltop. pretty good confirmation on the Borer prop throwing tips. i can't imagine how dissapointing that would be... even over Knik. I was talking to Dan on Merrill Field and he said the same thing; that he had heard of guys flying them for 500hrs and then cutting them up. its no way to run a ra...

I've used the beeper box mentioned above and it works great. you can set it to turn off after a certain amount of time, or you can turn it off with a second page. the box is pretty spendy, but it at least doubles the amount of flying I do in the winter, so it's been worth it to me. depending on how ...
