Re: Tailwheel tie down ring - winch point

Rob, I think it would be much more likely that the tailwheel mainspring was tweaked if one was pulling from the tailwheel axle than from the tie down ring. Bruce has posted Scott’s tailwheel shimmy checklist here . I’d never noticed that they say, on item seven, that the center spindle should be “pe...

Re: Care's FAA Question

John,
I’m also unable to access these aircraft records. I don’t think the issue has anything to do with our computer equipment. I’ll try contacting FAA OKC.

Re: different engines in 170's

Ghostflyer mentioned that the engine came from an L-19. The L-19 came with two versions of the O-470. The O-470-11 or -11B used a fix pitch prop. The O-470-15 used the constant speed prop. 391 lbs. and 408 lbs. dry weight respectively according to the TCDS. Researching the FAA database for the C-170...

Snap Ring Orientation

Apologies in advance for the thread drift. My previous entry about snap ring orientation should not be used when installing the crankshaft counterweight pins. The overhaul manual specifies that the snap ring be installed “with the flat or rough side to the outside.” Similar instructions are shown on...

Piston Rings for Chrome Cylinders

Continental shows the ring set for the chrome barrel to be p/n 653394. They are available from an online auction site where it has the following picture displaying the individual rings: s-l1600.jpg What doesn't make sense is that these rings in the O-300 IPC are not the ones listed for chrome cylind...

1/4” Hole in Crankshaft Flange

This is a continuation from the off-topic discussion on page two of this thread regarding dampened crankshafts. The connection to LED lights is that these lights use less current and thus provide an alternative to installing 35 amp. generators which require dampened crankshafts, i.e. crankshafts wit...

Re: O-300D crank

Only 12 years late in answering this but, according to SIL05-3A, the “F” is a shipping designation. B=Wood crate, F=Factory packaging. SIL05-3A.pdf Note that this Service Information Letter says it is for “all current production engines” so it’s possible that the “F” meant something different 70 yea...

Re: Wanted: Lens/Cap for Safe Flight Warning Horn unit

Google "red dialco" to see numerous options. You're looking for a cap that fits a indicator lamp for a 11/16" mounting hole. The lens is frosted. This looks like it might work. Stall Warning Light.jpg I see here that they also made an adjustable lens cap. As it might be possible to ina...

It looks like that Service Bulletin has been incorporated into Chapter 9-1 of the Standard Practice Maintenance Manual.

Re: Oil Leak

I was going to say make sure and install the snap ring correctly as it’s easy to install them backwards. I’m embarrassed to say that I was about to give the wrong advice. Here’s the right way according to this website:

Re: Oil Leak

There are two options for plugs; what you have — p/n 25149, or a hubbard plug — p/n 24770. As you can see in the last column of the IPC, p/n 25149 is useable on code C and E which translates to the C145-2H and the O-300B engines. Remove the snap ring and pull on the plug center nub with a pliers to ...

Re: Oil Leak

Larry, I also have an O-300B engine. The plug which is retained by the snap ring has a groove in it. IMG_0770.jpeg The AN6227-28 o-ring fits in this groove. AN6227-28 is an obsolete part number and is replaced by MS28775-325. Looking at the chart in Genuine Aircraft Hardware’s catalog, one might con...

Re: Cowlings needed for 1954 170B

Expand your search to include 1956-58 C-172 cowlings which have same cowl part number. Also expand your search by Googling sub-assembly part numbers. For example, here is a reasonably priced upper cowl without the nose bowl part. The dent can be removed by anyone handy with an english wheel. The nos...
