Re: Spring gear leg fairings? / AV10

I am optimistic that we can pull something together by AV10 if we start now. I have a call in to John Barrows and know many of the movers-and-shakers up in Oshkosh should we need to pull some strings. It sure was great seeing three Bobcats in a row this year. Kent

Re: Spring gear leg fairings? / AV10

Thanks Richard. I will contact him. I generally arrive on Saturday or Sunday and spend the entire week at AirVenture, working as a writer for Sport Aviation. Let's see where we can go with this. Kent

Re: Spring gear leg fairings? / AV10

Yes, they are low compared to what came before, but they are much worse than the nicely faired legs one finds today on Cirrus, RVs, etc. Of course, when you're flying slow this really doesn't matter all that much, I was just curious to know if anyone had ever thought of this. Sure wish we could have...

Spring gear leg fairings? / AV10

Does anyone make an aerodynamic fairing for spring steel landing gear legs found on older Cessnas like our C170s?

There were quite a few C170s at AirVenture this year, but parked randomly. What would it take to get a few rows reserved in Vintage like those C-195 drivers always have?

Re: Side Window Questions

Of course it will take a great deal of imagination, and the right paint scheme. I always wanted an L-19/O-1 but they aren't all that practical and I don't want to sell my very practical C-170. I have no desire to turn my C170 into a show plane, return it to original appearance or leave unpainted (I ...

Re: Side Window Questions

Prices at Great Lakes are good, not sure that I can do this much cheaper when I figure the value of my time and inevitable scrap. I have a long-term (crazy, I know) project to make my C170 look like an O-1. I have seen O-1's with tinted windows, but not sure if this was typical in Vietnam. Can anyon...

Side Window Questions

I wish to replace all four side windows in my '52 C170 N2758D. What material should I use for the new windows, i.e. thickness & good source. If plexiglas, is there anything wrong/illegal with using a sheet of the stuff from Home Depot? Does anyone have templates I can print out and use to cut th...

Fuel Selector Placard

I just installed the AMC Fuel Selector (A/C Spruce P/N 05-00899) in my 1952 C170B. The old one was barely legible. The AMC unit is a single piece, matt black, with silver engraved lettering. Very nice and easy to install. HOWEVER - on the new placard, the following warning not on the original placar...

Disassembly of Scott Tailwheel

The tube in my C170B tailwheel has a leak. I am not able to pull the two-part wheel apart with common toolbox tools. Does anyone have a tip how to do this? I have of course removed the four bolts holding the two halves together. Kent

Touchups

Thanks to all for the good suggestions. Now, how does one prepare a hundred or so blemishes, some of which are poor touchup jobs from years past? Strip & sand with Scoth-brite? Kent from NC

Airbrush leading edge

My C170 is in great shape except for many years of hangar rash, especially on the leading edges of the wings and stabs. Can anyone suggest a procedure to prepare and paint these spots using an artist's airbrush, including a good source of paints that will withstand future leading edge impacts? Many ...

Somehow the idea of standing on a major structural element designed for tension like a wing strut just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Plus, the thing is 50+ years old. The strut is nothing more than a hollow tube that has been formed into a teardrop shape. I doubt that Cessna engineers designe...
