Re: FUEL GAUGE WOES

Well my replacement gauge arrived and measured 4" from the face to the gear, just like the stock gauge and just like AS&S said it would. The gas tank neck measures 3-1/4". So I cut the rod to match the original float and DID NOT bend it as I did not see a reason to and staked both ends...

Re: FUEL GAUGE WOES

George, I haven't purchased the gauge (yet) and I am reluctant to at this point after reading the problems Jeff has had. I also am fully aware of the communication breakdown between the parties invloved on this subject. What I believe Jeff tried to explain and then I tried to clarify with my drawing...

Re: FUEL GAUGE WOES

I see what Jeff is saying. From the drawings from AS&S, it looks like the gear was at one time 4" from the gauge. But looking at the photo AS&S published and from Jeff's description, the gear is only 2 or so inches from the gauge. So making my own mark-ups from their drawing I was able ...

Re: Pre-buy Checklist

Here is the entire list: 170_Annual_Pre_Buy.doc But when looking over a potential 170 buy, check these items first (these items are in the extensive list above): Rudder circuit cables between the rudder and the aft bulkhead (inside the tail cone.) These are really hard to get to and so are highly-ne...

Re: Assist Straps

Here is another option if the casting brackets are broken like they were on my 180. Make the part that bites into the rope like I detailed a few posts up, then go to the hardware store and buy a ring and some pre-drilled brackets. Put the ring in a vise to make it oval and bend the pre-drilled brack...

Re: Mallory Rheostat

I was able to repair mine by popping the top and then dropping a dab of solder where it was obvious a wire had melted. Works perfect again.

Re: Assist Straps

Assuming you still have the original ends available and the tools, here is how you can repair your assist straps for under $8 a pair. Buy 4 Raco Cable Protectors at less than $0.50 each. Home Depot may have them. I found mine at the local hardware store. CableProtectInBox.jpg Buy 3’ of 5/8” Blac...

Re: Scott oil temp gauge replacement--warning

For posterity reasons and due to broken links, I am uploading SIL-7701 and a few pictures to this website.

It appears Scott was purchased by AVOX systems and Avox has been purchased by Zodiac Aerospace.

Re: Ford Alternator oil Leak ?

Don't forget the o-ring ES4140. My spacer also had a groove worn in it and had to be replace (ES4141). For my fellow Alaskan's, use Seaplanes North (formerly Floats Alaska) at Lake Hood for your cessna parts and avoid the $35 shipping costs using online vendors. Seaplanes North does charge a buck or...

Re: dipstick

I think this issue may have been addressed some time ago, but I have an O300-B in my 172 TD and I am sure the dipstick is the one that was in the engine when the plane had the nose wheel. My question, is there a difference in the dipsticks for a 170 vs a 172 with the same engine? Page 5 of the 1956...

Re: Failed # 5 cylinders on a C145

For what it's worth, my #5 cylinder has come in at the low 60's the last 4 annuals. This year it was high 70's like the rest! I didn't do anything thing different this year than the other years. This is on my '53 170B.

Re: Repairing a leaking oil pan

Too late. I just got back from the P.O. But I will talk to my AMT about submitting that form with pictures if need be. I almost kept the case bucause I knew it would cost about $50 to ship out and probably is not repairable but then I figured if they could repair it then another 170 may be easier sa...

Re: Repairing a leaking oil pan

Corey, THANKS for the excellent photos and descriptions! Your old (defective) weld repair: Do you know who actually did that work and was it an approved repair? Do your logs give you that info? Actually I do. My logs indicate the engine underwent a top overhaul that began December 1976 with 2000 ho...
